Well-organised and important to visit
Very impressed with this Dachau concentration camp tour from Munich. We got the guided tour because we didn’t want to get there ourselves, and we wanted to visit the site properly. I think we owe it to the victims to learn about the tragedy that happened here. The visit is very sobering, but educational and deeply moving. Jesse really knew his stuff, and brought the camp’s history to life. Much more engaging than just reading signs. He was also great on the train; travel was easy, no problems.
Much better than a solo visit
We almost visited Dachau by ourselves. In the end though, I’m glad my son convinced us to do the organized Dachau memorial site tour from Munich. We could have figured out the trains, but it would have been so much more hassle. And Stephanie was an amazing guide. Full of knowledge, energy, while still being considerate of Dachau’s victims. Also very empathetic - she gave me a tissue when I needed it. Her stories really put everything that happened at Dachau into context. Without her, I think I wouldn’t have fully grasped the history.

EXPLORE THE LONGEST-RUNNING NAZI CONCENTRATION CAMP
Board the train in Munich with your guide, and travel through the countryside to Dachau. Once you arrive, your first stop is the Dachau concentration camp memorial. Your guide will show you the camp’s somber sights, including the gas chambers, barracks, and cells. See the barracks where Sigmund Rascher conducted medical experiments. Almost 100 victims perished as a result of these atrocities. They included hypothermia experiments, “high altitude” experiments, and attempts to revive prisoners who were presumed dead. You’ll also view the infamous standing cells, where prisoners could do nothing but stand.
VIEW THE DACHAU MEMORIAL MUSEUM
Included in the concentration camp memorial site is the official Dachau Memorial Museum. This is your second stop, and where you’ll visit an exhibition of prisoners’ pictures and reports. Split into 6 sections, the space illustrates the full ‘path of the prisoner’. In other words, their arrival at the camp, life there, and their fate - either death or liberation. The first two sections explain the history that led to Nazi dictatorship and the camp set-up. Then comes the founding of the camp, and its operations during World War II. Finally, the fifth and sixth sections detail the camp’s liberation and its fate after the war.
LISTEN TO YOUR GUIDE TO LEARN THE CAMP’S HISTORY
This isn’t just a transfer service; the Dachau Tour from Munich includes a full camp memorial site tour. As you walk, listen to your guide to truly understand the tragic history here. Dachau was opened in 1933, and only closed in 1945. This makes it the longest-running Nazi concentration camp. It was also the first camp, opened under the guise of housing ‘political prisoners’. However, Jehovah's Witnesses, homosexuals, and emigrants were already sent to Dachau in 1935. When the US Army finally liberated it on April 29th, 1945, over 32,000 prisoners had perished (though the true number is believed to exceed 40,000).

Do you know who opened the Dachau concentration camp?
Heinrich Himmler himself. Often called Hitler’s right-hand man, Himmler was the 4th-ever leader of the SS. The Schutzstaffel was Hitler’s paramilitary force, and Nazi Germany's most powerful organisation. However, in 1933, Himmler was only Munich’s Chief of Police. He first toured the site, then an unused gunpowder and munitions factory. Later, he approved it to be a concentration camp. It was formally opened on March 22nd, 1933, with the arrival of 200 political prisoners. Himmler described it as "the first concentration camp for political prisoners" that would restore calm to Germany.
